Introducing Roshanna Dotson

Hi, Everyone!

My name is Roshanna Dotson and I am the new communications intern for L.A.C.E.S. I am in the graduate program for Strategic Communication at American University in Washington, D.C. and my concentration is in Advocacy and Social Impact. In the future, I hope to collect and share stories of marginalized communities that have often been disregarded. In doing this, my desire is to help develop awareness, create connections between communities, and build support for positive long-lasting change.

A few fun facts about me and what I have learned about L.A.C.E.S.

I’m from California, where the sun always shines, so I’m always excited when we have warm, sunny days here in D.C. I love going on hikes. Being able to get out, exercise, and be among nature for a few hours definitely puts me in a great mood. I also love to travel, I’ve been to 15 countries so far, and I can’t wait to do some more exploring.

L.A.C.E.S. is an amazing organization, and what first stuck out to me was that they empower local communities by teaching them the skills they need to continue to build a positive future for themselves. Kind of like the saying, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” I believe that this method of teaching adds so much value to communities, because it helps to create a sustainable environment.

One of the things that I have come to love in working with Seren and Leah these last few weeks is our morning catch-up sessions. With the pandemic, it’s been almost a year since we have been living, working, and going to school inside. Taking the time to check-in with each other, connect on a personal level, and create a positive space definitely helps on days where I’m stuck inside.

There are a lot of things that I’m excited about but I will just list a few.

I’m excited to be working with L.A.C.E.S. social media platforms-especially Instagram. I have always loved digital design and social media, and with Covid-19, the world has had to come up with new ways to connect, encourage each other, and have fun. I’m excited to work with Seren and Leah, to see how we can provide this kind of support through our social media while still upholding the L.A.C.E.S mission and values.

I’m also interested in learning how to collect and share stories of the people who are within the L.A.C.E.S. organization. So that means interviews! It always gets me excited to meet new people and hear their stories. My goal is to have a collection of stories from some of the children of L.A.C.E.S. so we can get to know more about them and how L.A.C.E.S. has helped them to achieve on a day-to-day basis.

Be sure to stay connected with L.A.C.E.S. through our InstagramFacebook, and Twitter.

Thanks,

Roshanna
